ANIS - Talentprisen 2012

I just returned from an amazing week at Odense International Film Festival. Not only was it a week with beautiful people and good friends, but to top it off with an award ceremony that honored animation as a medium and not a genre, awarding Hund i Himlen (Nørlum and Basmati Film) the National Grand Prix and showering the animation industry in general with awards and special mentionings.

We took home "ANIS talentprisen 2012" (The Danish Animation Guilds Talent Award 2012) for "an extraordinairy film within the animation genre" - I am SO honored to have received this award alongside the team of the ATA (the m.fl on the plaque means among others) it has been a power presentation from everyone involved.

It was the top of the cherry to get it handed over by Flemming Quist Møller, one of the animation directors that created my childhood alongside Gunnar Wille (another childhood hero) and Paw Charlie Ravn, who is one of the most talented young Turks in the Danish animation industry today.

A very nice person from the audience was so kind to send me my acceptance speech, where I am very happy and ranting a lot. I forgot to thank a bunch of people, not least Ewen Stenhouse, Maxwell A Oginni & Kaiserbrand who all did episodes and are really good friends, Shaun Farley (and ANIS, ouch). But I hope you all know it wasn't personal, my brain just malfunctioned. Hopefully you can tell by the clip that Im really happy...

The Lick...

I just finished my first oil painting in years. The last one i did is 14 years ago when I was in my teens, and ever  since Ive been working with acrylics, simply because it dries faster and is less messy, but the oilpaints has other advantages, like more luminous colors and easier to blend on the canvas because they dont dry out in a second. So introducing "The Lick", based on an old sketch in my sketchbook from a few years back

Comics day... Apparently.

Tonight Im going to the release of Neufundland, Jakob Schuh & Co's new collaborative comic book. I had the possibility to flip throug it briefly yesterday, and it looks pretty awesome (very french). Allthough claimed to be a fan-zine the quality of the print and the contributions just look too darn good. But not to debate definitions. Go buy it! A lot of talent in there.

On top of this my old friend Cav Bogelund is in town. About 10 yers ago we had a comic book club every Tuesday evening, where we would meet, drink coffee and draw comics. He is a comic book Rockstar back in the homeland today - and rightfully so. That kid is a graphical whiz...

Because all this is cosmic comic stuff happening today, I found this old two pager from one of my sketchbook. It is based on a series of conversations I had with Mads Juul back in 09. I actually drew these pages one evening after I got back home from hanging with Mads. Or almost. I got to 1,5 page before falling asleep, and now 3 years later I pulled myself together and finished it off - coloring it french style inspired by the cats from Neufundland... E.A.R - Another opening night

Ive known Günther and Raphael for the better part of 3 years now. They are a pair of unbelievable pop-smiths and super nice guys. Unfortunately I dont see them that often. A part from E.A.R Mr Günther K. Harder has a blooming career as an actor at the theater in Leipzig and Raphael is busy with his music producing empire, but when I get the chance to hang with these cats it is a blast.

I shot this live-session at Raphael's studio here in Berlin. It is a super cosy little place, but unfortunately my home build camera was suffering a bit under the low-light-conditions hence the somewhat grainy pictures. But somehow it doesn't really matter because of the song. Günther's amazing vocals and Raphael's beautiful minimalistic guitar really pulls it all together...

I hope the video brings out the vibe of the day - and that you'll enjoy it just as much as I did.

Caught by the Urban Hunter

My dear friend, artist and photographer David Josef Tamargo honored me this morning by hanging my portrait in his online gallery. It is taken during my last stay with him and Lindsay Scoggins in LA while we set up for the Party Animals exhibition last summer at the Royal/T - after a good night out as I remember..

The picture is taken in the lobby of the Culver City Hotel where we stayed during the week. It is an old fashioned piece of Hollywood history that place.

I found this paragraph in an article on the Guardian which sums it up pretty well...

"During filming, Judy Garland and Wizard of Oz producer Mervyn Le Roy commented on "dwarf sex parties" and "orgies and drunkenness" among the munchkin actors. Well, what else were they supposed to do? The small people, billeted separately from the other performers, were under de facto house arrest in their Culver City hotel. They were taken from there directly on to the studio set, and then taken straight back. The actors have since claimed, in accounts of that period and biographies, to have been paid far less than the other actors, even less than the dog playing Toto."
